Why the hell was there milk in Soo Lin’s fridge?
When Sherlock breaks into Soo Lin’s flat, he finds milk in the fridge and sniffs it to see if it’s spoilt. I just noticed, why was there milk in her fridge in the first place?
Milk is not a part of traditional Chinese cuisine. It is highly uncommon because more than 80% of Chinese people are lactose intolerant. Traditionally, tea is not drunk with milk in it in China, and for other meals and dishes coconut milk is much more common. In the age of globalisation you do find western dairy products in Asian countries as well, but learning more about Soo Lin’s life story (having lost her parents and being so poor she had to join that crime syndicate in order to survive) I somehow can’t see her strolling around the streets of a modern Chinese metropolis and getting herself a latte at Starbucks.
And since she only came to England in her teens (and by her looks I would estimate her being no older than 28) it is highly unlikely she is a) one of the <20% that are lactose tolerant and b) has picked up the habit of making herself British tea with milk or coffee when she is so keen on her tea traditions.
So, why was there milk in her fridge?
Okay this post is basically going “YOU’RE CHINESE THEREFORE YOU CAN’T DRINK MILK BECAUSE TRADITIONS ETC. RACIAL STEREOTYPING ETC.”
I also have a feeling that you aren’t Chinese and/or Asian, so I’m going to spell some things out for you:
- lactose intolerance doesn’t mean you can’t outright drink dairy milk. This condition exists in varying degrees.
- You’re basing this on traditions. In the 21st century. Soo Lin lives in London, England. You’re saying that BECAUSE she’s a historian whose passion is the history of China, living in 21st Century England wouldn’t drink her tea/coffee with milk?
- Soo Lin is well-off now. Is she not allowed to adjust to Western life?
- Hey so let’s say that I, a Chinese girl, have a passion in Chinese culture, too. My family is also not as well off as others, meaning we’re just classed as middle working class. Why would I drink milk for? My parents are deeply invested in Chinese culture. My dad prefers China over Australia.
- BUT. GASP.
- HE DRINKS. MILK.
- WITH HIS COFFEE.
- BECAUSE HE LIKES IT.
- NO, DAIRY MILK IS NOT PART OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE CUISINE BUT GOD FUCKING DAMN, DOES THAT REALLY LIMIT US IN EATING WHATEVER THE FUCK WE WANT?
- OR HOW WE’RE REPRESENTED IN THE MEDIA?
- NO.
- YOU’RE BASICALLY ASKING “WHY AREN’T ASIANS STEREOTYPICALLY DEPICTED IN THIS WESTERN SHOW?”
- WHY DID I HAVE TO TYPE THIS OUT?
… I guess I should throw my milk out. You know, since I’m Asian, slightly lactose intolerant and don’t drink my tea with milk.
I mean I guess I don’t need to eat my cereal with milk after all! Since Asians don’t eat cereal!
WHY AM I EVEN REPLYING TO THIS STUPID POST IN THE FIRST PLACE
omg he’s just smelling the milk so that he can tell how long she has been out.
and CHINESE people do drink milk. Whaddya think we eat our cereal, or make delicious pastries with? OH I KNOW, HERBS.
Im chinese and not lactose intolerant oh no why did i just drink this entire cup of earl grey milk tea with tapioca pearls in it ooohhh nooo
DISHONOUR ON MAH FAMIRY
DISHONOUR ON YOUR COW.
oh wait why does mushu say that? COWS ARE FOR MILK AND BEEF AND OTHER STUFF….
That’s like saying all Western folks can’t have nut products because part of the population has a peanut allergy.
Also: only lactose-intolerant in my (very Chinese) family, don’t give a damn, they make pills for the consequences now

New headcanon: Nobody at Scotland Yard knows how to flip the water bottle onto the cooler without spilling, so they never have water to drink. The detectives just stand around the water cooler staring longingly.
